About Eclipse
Eclipse offer land line telephone services alongside dial-up, ADSL (up to 24mb download speed), and fibre-optic broadband (up to 40mb download speed). They also offer both home and commercial broadband packages, as well as other commercial services such as SDSL, leased-lined broadband and bonded DSL. Eclipse business broadband packages come with carious extras that every business needs: web-space allocation, domain name, PC back-up facilities. Their fibre-optic cable broadband service is also tailored towards commercial use, coming as it does with a guaranteed throughput of 12mbps.
This dedication to quality service has paid off and in March 2011 Eclipse broadband was one of only 5 ISPs who made consumer magazine Which?’s grade when it came to quality of service.
Best Bits
Eclipse will refund you your first two months of your broadband subscription fee if you switch from a BT line rental to an Eclipse line rental in your first two months of subscription.
Eclipse has been my only broadband supplier since it became available in September 2003. Until the last few months I had been very satisfied with their service. Line speed had progressively increased, possibly credit should be to BT, and costs have remained competitive.
On the few occasions I have needed to contact them about some issue, via their website, their responses have been satisfactory.
Last July they redesigned their website including a more detailed reporting of download activity. It is now possible to see this on a day by day basis. They also introduced email reminders when one had passed 50% of the monthly 10GB limit. Subsequent reminders for 75%, 90% and 100% are sent.
Although I had never exceeded the limit, I did do so on the first month of the new system. I have exceeded it many times since even though I do not feel that I have changed by pattern of usage (I very rarely use iPlayer).
I have been unable to obtain more detailed information from them about my usage. I would very much like some independent measure but this seems not to be possible.
Using the thinkbroadband.co.uk speed test I have experienced download speeds as high as 5Mbs but on other occasions this has dropped to 0.3Mbs. At the time of writing this, 2.30pm on a Wednesday, it is 1.37Mbs.
I am now seriously considering moving to another provider, one with a higher download limit. One can only hope the the download speeds are high.

A bit more about Eclipse
Eclipse began in the mid 90s as a small business start-up offering dial-up Internet in the South-West of England. As the ISP grew it eventually became a nationwide provider and in 2001 was among one the first ISPs to offer broadband Internet services. In 2004 Eclipse was acquired by UK-based telecommunications firm Kingston Communications and currently operates as a subsidiary company under the same Eclipse brand.
